After two successful years, the White Arena presents in 2015 a series of one-day exhibitions. The confined space and the round shape of the arena challenges the artists to try out and demonstrate new ways of working. The short duration and the special shape of the space make the White Arena suitable for various experiments such as work that is created on the spot, work with images, sound work, audience participation and so forth. The focus of the program in 2015 will be on performances and installations.

Geschichte in Geschichten, Helmhaus Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland, Thursday, 26.2.15, 18:30-20:00

hiStory on Thursday
Time to Meet – Performances by Ohad Ben Shimon (IL/FR), Paulien Oltheten (NL) and Ryan Rivadeneyra (US), in collaboration with Goran Galić and Gian-Reto Gredig
(in English)
Thursday, February 26, 18.30 h

With their ongoing video series «Guided Tours», artists Goran Galić/Gian-Reto Gredig collect the oral histories that are being told on guided tours through cities all over Europe. Next Thursday, the duo invites three international artists to tell their very own oral histories in the context of the exhibition «hiStories – Geschichte in Geschichten» at Helmhaus Zürich: For his contribution, Ohad Ben Shimon (IL/FR) spends a number of days in Zurich and will present his «Zurich Memoir», a new chapter in his ongoing «Diary» series: The artist for example tells the story of his attempts to open a Swiss bank account. In «The Artist Speaks» we look over Dutch artist Paulien Oltheten’s shoulders while she is working with her image archive – telling her own stories connected to individual photographs. In «E-Mails Concerning Happenings Considering Photography» Ryan Rivadeneyra (US) concerns himself with the relationship between performance and photography – and with the issue of historicizing live moments.

All artists involved are associated with «Time to Meet», an international platform for artists dedicated to the investigation of the photographic practice.

So every book will be unique and will have its own characteristics by its specific content."

Time to Meet is an international platform for artists dedicated to the investigation of the
photographic practice. On an irregular basis, with different initiators and in various
locations throughout Europe, Time to Meet brings together artists to jointly set up
artistic, critical and/or curatorial projects. This collaborative and nomadic approach
encourages and injects new ideas about photography into a wider artistic praxis of both
the participating artists and the public. For Time to Meet, photography functions not
merely as an objective but as a tool to activate the inherent stillness of the medium.
The free and open exchange of positions is imperative, demonstrating a continuing
adaptability to a progressive and ever-shifting medium.
At the invitation of the artists initiative Voorkamer, Time to Meet lands in the provincial
town of Lier and brings together 13 artists from different artistic and geographical
backgrounds for the exhibition‚ Grain, Wood
, Flax, Turf’. Since all of the contributors in
this edition have participated in one or more previous projects with Time to Meet, this
exhibition is also a reunion of artists whom been following each other for several years.

I Remember, it finds its own forms and attitudes for the things, people and places of which, implicated, it tells.

Making Use - Dutch Art Institute at the Van Abbemuseum, 22 June - 15 September, 2013

We cordially invite you to the opening of Making Use on Saturday 22 June. For the past three years the Van Abbemuseum has been teaching at the Dutch Art Institute (DAI / MFA ArtEZ) in Arnhem. Together with the students, the museum tackles a range of contemporary themes such as autonomy and the place of art in society. For the first time the course ends with an exhibition in the museum.

For the presentation the museum reversed the roles and asked the students to 'use' the museum, drawing on elements of the institution to inform their practice, from the collection, the spaces, people or limitations of the museum. The group tackled this challenge in different and surprising ways. The show will include works by Mercedes Azpilicueta and Ohad Ben Shimon, Anna Dasovic, Yoeri Guepin, Fotini Gouseti, Rei Kakiuchi, Eden Mitsenmacher, Pendar Nabipour, Fraser Stewart, Katja van Driel and Susan van Hengstum.

A Drunken Lesson, Symposium, dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany, 29-30 June, 2012

Ohad Ben Shimon will take part in
In vino veritates, A drunken lesson at dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany, 29-30 June, 2012.

In vino veritates, A drunken lesson
is just another seminar on Truth, but it looks for it through the devices of alcohol and circumstance. The participants drink to each new concept shared and discussed together, progressively becoming more drunk as the search goes on. But rather than looking for a universal model, they engage in parallel thoughts and multiplied visions: in vino veritates.

While no one will be able to grasp the big picture, each individual will bear witness to a piece of the whole, retransmitting and expanding it in unpredictable ways, beyond the confines of the lesson and the logic of learning itself. With Lars Bang Larsen, Diedrich Diederichsen, Boris Groys, Chus Martínez, Cesare Pietroiusti, Jakob Schillinger and Iacopo Seri.

Review of You Are Courteously Invited in Metropolis M, 12 April, 2012

Review by Julia Geerlings.

English Translation:

"The charming artists Ohad Ben Shimon and Veniamin Kazachenko invite you to their temporary set in 1646 for a collective theater performance. Open until Saturday, April 14 to visit in The Hague.

The title of the exhibition You Are Courteously Invited here should be taken literally. Ben Shimon and Kazachenko expect an active contribution of the visitors to the exhibition in which they want to investigate how the public and art institutions relate to each other. The joint project is the third in a series of Ohad Ben Shimon & Veniamin Kazachenko.

The space of 1646 is classified as a stage on which props as microphones, an easel and a keyboard are to be used in a spontaneous performance. The interaction with the visitors are filmed and put on the website and on Facebook, where great movies are to be seen in which they talk with visitors, and the famous music band Will & The People which they found in front of 1646 and picked them off the street to perform inside.

In this way the exhibition comments on the traditional role of the artist, artwork, art institutions and the art market. The title of the exhibition, for example, plays with the standard opening of an invitation to a gallery opening, the artists also have placed red dots below the drawings, which pretend to be already 'sold'. An exhibition like this is looking for the boundaries between reality and performance, and life and art."

You Are Courteously Invited, Ohad Ben Shimon & Veniamin Kazachenko, 1646, The Hague, 30 March - 14 April, 2012

VIEW FULL VIDEO DOCUMENTATION OF THE WHOLE PROCESS

You Are Courteously Invited is the 3rd chapter of a series of recent collaborative works by Ohad Ben Shimon & Veniamin Kazachenko and it follows two previous events conducted during February and March 2012 in Paris and Amsterdam.

In these series, the artists employ a Dialogue-Painting-Text-Lecture-Performance format to reflect upon and investigate the value and mechanisms of spectatorship/ performance/ representation/ production. For that, 1646 will be turned into a pre-production set/stage for the making of a new collective theater performance by the title You Are Courteously Invited.

You are courteously invited to take part in the planning, rehearsal and live presentation of this new theater piece during the opening at 1646 on March 30th at 19.00 and the successive live events ending April 14th.
